Honestly I'm surprised that Erdrick is an alt. I assumed he would be the character we'd see in Smash as the codename "Brave" character, but it turns out that other characters in Dragon Quest will be joining him as alts of "The Hero". I'm also surprised that we got gameplay for both characters revealed as DLC for Smash ("The Hero" and Banjo Kazooie).
